Working around Ubuntu awkwardnesses

1. Install gnome, or just gnome-core for a functional but more light-weight system.
2. Install gnome-panel
3. Install gdm, if it is not already installed
4. Logout
5. On the login screen change the window manager to 'gnome with no effects'
6. Login
7. Optionally, uninstall unity
8. Uninstall liboverlayscrollbar*
9. Optionally, edit /etc/X11/default-display-manager and replace lightdm by gdm.
10. Optionally, uninstall lightdm
11. You will probably want to install ubuntu-restricted-extras and libdvdread4, or some later incarnation. Look in /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4 for instructions on how to install the CSS decryption library.
